The home of GIFT University is the city of Gujranwala. Located about 67 km from Lahore on both sides of G.T. Road, Gujranwala is the fifth largest city in Pakistan and the third largest city in Punjab with a population of more than 4 million people. Punjabi is the local language, however English and Urdu are also common, particularly in schools and offices.
Gujranwala is a relatively recent settlement. It began as a small town about 500 years ago and true to its welcoming nature, it has played host to a number of rulers. It began as the home of the Jatt caste and was originally known as Khanpur Shansi. When the Gujjars gained prominence, the city was named Gujranwala. Ruled by the Mughals, it later fell into the hands of Sikhs after the death of Aurangzeb Alamgir in 1707. Maharaja Ranjit ruled for almost 40 years before the British empire firmly planted its flag over the Indian subcontinent for almost a century.
Today Gujranwala is a modern city which has, in recent years, become an industrial and cultural centre for the region. The city has a flavour of its own offering everything from the excitement of a vibrant city life to the peace and tranquillity. The city with its heritage has a good quality of life, and a growing national and international reputation.

Gujranwala is one of the industrial cities of Pakistan which has a congenial industrial climate and culture. It is a bustling centre for agriculture, industry and trade. The major exports of the city are rice, textiles, carpets, garments, goods of glass, electric fans, hosiery and leather products. The city houses some of the biggest names in the Industry. The major industries include textiles, carpets, ceramics, electric fans, sanitary fittings, hosiery products and yarns.
As the 3rd largest industrial city of the province, Gujranwala contributes 9 % to country's GDP and 8 % of the total tax revenue. It has provided employment to over half a million people. The city also plays a significant role in improving national exports. Its industries have developed and introduced various products at the international level.

The people of Gujranwala have a rich history. They are student friendly and known for their hospitality and politeness. Being an industrial city, Gujranwala has seen rapid industrial development during the last two decades. It provides enormous opportunities for young graduates to work and contribute towards the continuous development of this historic city.

Getting About
The city of Gujranwala is conveniently located on G.T. road. It is connected by rail, road and air to all the major cities in Pakistan. By road, the city is less than two hours away from Lahore, the capital of Punjab and three hours drive from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. There are also excellent rail links with major cities in Pakistan including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar etc. Gujranwala has a comprehensive bus system and students can travel on the buses to any place in the city. So visiting your friends and family would never be a problem.
Out and About in Gujranwala
Gujranwala unfolds to offer visitors different places. It contains numerous parks and places of human interest. There is Officers Club which has swimming pool, squash complex and much more. Among the many attractions in the city are Golf Club, Jinnah Park and Nishan-e-Manzil. The variety of parks and recreational places ensure that the city offers something for everyone.
