Career Prospects:

The two-year MPhil program is an advanced level Master in Mass Communication and Media Studies by course work degree, which gives an excellent starting point for a PhD with a similar skill set. It creates knowledge and leads to the development of methods and testing the robustness of existing theories. The MPhil graduates are expected to work with leading national and multinational Media Houses to serve their needs.

Most students will obtain a PhD position in different universities in the faculty of Media and Communication or at one of the other participating faculties. However, this is not the only way, and graduates with an MPhil degree can track their professions as executive bodies, analysts, and academicians. This higher-level degree provides an excellent foundation for those planning their careers in academia and the media field.

 

Program Description:

The MPhil in Mass Communication and Media Studies degree provides extensive training in social science research approaches and methods; critical engagement with the latest theory and research on media, culture, and communication. For an understanding of the history and development of communication research; focused training is provided in the theories, debates, approaches, and methods necessary for analyzing and understanding media and communication processes in their social, cultural, economic, and political context. The course is based on integrated lectures with seminar presentations to prepare students for the transition from study to work. This MPhil program is designed in accordance with the HEC requirements, which consist of 30 credit hours: course work 24 credit hours and thesis 6 credit hours.

 

Program Objectives:

MPhil in Media and Communication provides students with a comprehensive grounding in the theories, Research Methods, and communication design necessary for studying, analyzing, and understanding media concepts, communication design, and production processes in the national and global context. The degree also provides a solid scholarly foundation for students interested in continuing their study in communication and media doctoral programs.

Success in the competitive media industry often depends on one’s determination and motivation, but skills from a media degree can be used in many jobs. Jobs directly related to this degree include:

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

For admission in the M.Phil program, the candidates must possess 16 years of relevant education with a minimum 2nd Division/2.00 CGPA from an HEC recognized university. Candidates who do not have Media Studies (including Communication Design, Applied Arts, Social Sciences, Advertising/Marketing, and Performing Arts, etc.) background, following conditions, will apply:

  • Students need to complete four remedial/deficiency courses (12 credits hours) in the first semester before they will be permitted to continue regular courses.
  • This semester will be considered a zero semester and the credits will not contribute to the CGPA.
  • These courses will be mentioned on the transcript with a zero GPA.
  • The length of the completion of the degree will increase by one semester though the maximum limit of four years of degree completion will remain the same.

GAT (General)/ or University organized Test is mandatory for all M.Phil candidates with a minimum score of 50%. Admission will be based on the previous academic performance of the applicants.

Enquiries

The Admission Office at GIFT University deals with the enquiries concerning admissions. The prospective candidates are advised to consult this office during working hours of the University.

 

General Criteria to Apply

  • The candidate fulfills the eligibility conditions of the program.
  • The candidate must have earned the eligibility qualification from a recognized educational institution.
  • Good proficiency in English language.
  • The candidate has not been debarred on disciplinary grounds during his earlier educational career.

Admission Application

  • Applications for admissions are invited through advertisement in the media. The prospective candidates are advised to obtain the University Prospectus, Application Form and Admission Schedule from the Admissions Office. They may make queries to the officer on duty for further information.
  • Admission Application should be submitted together with all required documents within the prescribed time limit in the Student Affairs Centre Admissions Office.
  • Online Applicants can apply just by filling the required fields of Online Application Form. Their documents will be verified at the day of admissions test and interview.
  • After admission test and interview, the Admission Committee will advise the successful candidates to deposit fee and other dues in the Accounts Office within the specified time limit.
  • On payment of fee and dues, the Accounts Office will issue the Registration Number to the candidate. at least two days prior to the commencement of the semester.
