Masters of Studies or Master of Philosophy in Islamic Studies (MS / MPhil IS)

Program Description:

M Phil/MS in Islamic Studies is an intensive program that provides you a strong grounding in various sub-disciplines of classical and modern Islamic learning. What is different about this program is that it encourages you to be inquisitive by engaging you in research based assignments. It also gives you an extensive look into the contemporary academic debates in the field of Islamic Studies. Overall, it is a well-rounded and thorough program that will immensely increase your ability to undertake academic research at an enhanced level.
Candidates enrolled in this program will either need to complete 32 credit hours of course work or, alternatively, complete 26 credit hours of course work along with 6 credit hours of research work/thesis. Candidates who complete 32 credit hours of course work shall be awarded MS degree while those who complete 26 credit hours of course work plus 6 credit hours of research work shall be awarded M Phil degree.

 

Admission and Eligibility Criteria:

MA in Islamic/Arabic Studies (or an equivalent degree recognized by HEC) with minimum second division. (The University has the discretion to admit students with a master’s degree in other disciplines and sufficient knowledge base in Islamic Studies). Applicants with a strong background in Arabic or those with research thesis in their MA will be given preference. Admission will be on merit, determined on the basis of the applicant’s previous academic record, and performance in a written test and an interview. To qualify for the award of the degree, the student must also pass an especially designed Languages Competency Test (LCT).

Program Models:

Keeping in view the varying circumstances of the candidates, MPhil program is offered at GIFT in two different models:

  • Regular Classes Model - the course work is completed in regular weekly classes.
  • Workshop Model - the course work is done in intensive workshops that may last for 2-3 consecutive weeks.

Enquiries

The Admission Office at GIFT University deals with the enquiries concerning admissions. The prospective candidates are advised to consult this office during working hours of the University.

 

General Criteria to Apply

  • The candidate fulfills the eligibility conditions of the program.
  • The candidate must have earned the eligibility qualification from a recognized educational institution.
  • Good proficiency in English language.
  • The candidate has not been debarred on disciplinary grounds during his earlier educational career.
 

Admission Application

  • Applications for admissions are invited through advertisement in the media. The prospective candidates are advised to obtain the University Prospectus, Application Form and Admission Schedule from the Admissions Office. They may make queries to the officer on duty for further information.
  • Admission Application should be submitted together with all required documents within the prescribed time limit in the Student Affairs Centre Admissions Office.
  • Online Applicants can apply just by filling the required fields of Online Application Form. Their documents will be verified at the day of admissions test and interview.
  • After admission test and interview, the Admission Committee will advise the successful candidates to deposit fee and other dues in the Accounts Office within the specified time limit.
  • On payment of fee and dues, the Accounts Office will issue the Registration Number to the candidate. at least two days prior to the commencement of the semester.
